Michael Klenfner
Birth: 1947
Kings County (Brooklyn)
New York, USA
Death: Jul. 14, 2009
New York County (Manhattan)
New York, USA

Michael Klenfner, a storied record man who got his start in the music business working for Bill Graham at the Fillmore East, died July 14 from a heart attack. He was 62.

In recent years, Klenfner worked as a consultant, but he spent many years working on the record label side of the business. In the early 1970's, he was the head of FM/album promotion for Columbia Records, remembers one longtime CBS/Sony Music executive, Bob Sherwood. When Clive Davis turned Bell into Arista Records, Klenfner was an early hire, according to Sherwood.

After Arista, Klenfner worked for Atlantic Records and along the way became involved with Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi as they developed into the Blues Brothers. Klenfner could often be found manning the door at Aykroyd's legendary after hours bar in Tribeca and later would have a cameo role in the Blues Brothers film.

Klenfner's service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 West 76th Street, in New York City. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made in Klenfner's name to the American Heart Association.
