Selena Lea Kuykendall, 40, of Houston died April 11, 2007. Private memorial services are scheduled. Griffin Mortuary.
Police have identified the woman who was found dead in a Northeast Lubbock field Tuesday.
The body of Selena "Melody" Kuykendall, 40, was found Tuesday evening in a remote area near the intersection of East Municipal Drive and North Olive Avenue. (She had been beaten and stabbed.)
A person who was jogging in the area found the body, which was out in the open, said Sgt. Jeff Baker.
"We are investigating this as a homicide," he said.
Until an autopsy is complete, police are not releasing any additional information about the condition of the body or cause of death.
Baker said Kuykendall had been in Lubbock only a few months before her death. She was originally from Houston.
In 1999, farmers discovered the body of Amanda Sue Gschwend of Lubbock in a cotton field near Olive Avenue and East Municipal Drive - the same area Kuykendall's body was found. Gschwend's death was determined to be a homicide, but authorities have not convicted anyone for the killing.
Police investigators said Wednesday there doesn't seem to be any connection between Kuykendall and Gschwend or any other recent murders in the Lubbock area.
"We're certainly looking to see if there are any similarities, but they do not appear to be connected," Baker said.
Police are offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and prosecution of the person who killed Kuykendall.
Police say Kuykendall often hung out in the areas of 44th Street and Avenue Q and 16th Street and Avenue Q.
Anyone with information about Kuykendall is asked to call Lubbock police detectives Jeremy Jones at 775-3072 or Rey Martinez at 775-2405 or Crime Line at 741-1000.
