Edward James McKernin
Birth: Mar. 4, 1878
Nova Scotia, Canada
Death: Mar. 13, 1968
Pinellas County
Florida, USA

Edward was the son of Charles McKernin and Catherine Mc Donnell. He had a brother William, a brother Francis (Frank) who is buried in Rhode Island, and a sister Julia E McKernin Fenner (Memorial # 26727153).

Edward married Eugenia Leigh (daughter of David Leigh and Anna Cady) and they had two children: Helen Leigh McKernin, born in Jamestown, NY, and Dorothy McKernin.

His service in the Spanish American War began on Aug 6, 1898 and went until 1902. Edward was part of Battery L, 2nd Regiment Infantry. After graduating from the Palmer School of Chiropractic in 1921, in Davenport Iowa, he was a chiropractor in several places, including Manhattan and Brooklyn, where he always had a brass plaque on his desk that said, "Keep smiling".

Prior to that he was a pattern maker for felt hats. Before that, he was a carpenter in Boston. Grandson Leigh remembers his penchant for buying "fixer-uppers", which meant at least seven moves. Another grandson remembers that in his later years Edward drove a big old Cadillac. Granddaughter, Laura, remembers dancing a jig whenever they visited.

His obituary in the St. Petersburg Times read: McKERNIN, EDWARD JAMES, 88, 4416 Sunset Drive, Buena Vista, Holiday, Wednesday (March 18, 1958). Born in Nova Scotia, lived in the Holiday and Tarpon Springs area and in Long Island, N.Y. Retired chiropractor. Spanish-American Army veteran. Methodist. Survived by wife Pearl; two daughters, Mrs. Helen Jarman, Palm Harbor; Mrs. Dorothy Nelson, Bellport, L.I.; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren. North Funeral Home, Tarpon Springs.
