Henry (originally spelled "Henri") Andrew Jacob, Sr. was born in Kruth in the upper Thur Valley in Alsace, France on May 15, 1813. The Jacob family has been traced back to the early 1600's in the Kruth area. Henry was the seventh generation known to be born there. The Jacob family was Roman Catholic like most people in this region. In 1837 he married Agatha Sifferlen. The couple had eleven children. The first nine were born in Alsace, the two youngest, including Reinhold Jacob, were born in Texas. According to researcher Claud Gewiss, Henry was a weaver, as were three of his sons. During the middle of the 19th century, the textile mills which were the main employer in the Thur Valley were becoming mechanized, leading to unemployment. Thus when Henri Castro showed up from Texas in the 1840's looking for settlers for his Castroville colony, he found a ready pool of emigrants. Henry's sister Theresa and her husband Peter Bluntzer emigrated to Texas in 1843. While they were traveling to Castroville, Theresa fell from an ox cart and broke her hip. Peter Bluntzer fell in love with the DeWitt County area while she was recuperating and wound up founding the Meyersville community. Henry left Alsace in late 1853, and arrived in New Orleans in January 1854. Henry came to Texas alone, apparently settling first on Hoosier Creek near Ander in Goliad County. He bought land and livestock and became a farmer. In 1856, his wife Agatha Sifferlen Jacob came to join him from Alsace, bringing their nine children with them. Henry Andrew Jacob, Sr. died in 1897, and is buried in Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in Meyersville, DeWitt County, Texas.
