Thomas Luke Tipton born to John and Hannah Ann (Grisell) Tipton. Married Hannah A. Lewis July 25, 1868 at the home of the bride's sister, Mrs. Caroline Blackledge, on "Quaker Ridge" near Jerusalem, Oh. He was a Hicksite Quaker. They had three sons, all of whom died in their early manhood. Clifton Lewis Tipton, 1869-1905, died of TB, James Bert,1872-1916,died of flu or pneumonia, and Joseph Linley,1876-1925 died of Bright's Disease.
"Luke" was a blacksmith and an inventor. He enlisted in the Civil War in 1862, Company C, 116th Reg. Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was honorably discharged with an illness. His parents came to Ohio from Harford Co. Maryland. His parental ancestors were descended from the Wm. Burgess who was with Wm. Penn under the "Elm" when the famous treat was made.
