Elisha C. Terry
Birth: Oct. 11, 1834
Richmond County
North Carolina, USA
Death: Nov. 3, 1911
Richmond County
North Carolina, USA

Son of Jane G. Crowson and James Leak Terry, who are buried to his far right (while facing Elisha's marker).

Husband of (1) Abigail McDonald (on his near right) & (2) Martha Jane McKay (her 2nd husband) (on his left).

Father of 8 children with Abigail.

Elisha was a farmer. He served for a short period as a Confederate postmaster during the War between the States. In August 1865, he applied for and received a Presidential pardon for said service to the Confederacy.

It is unknown what the middle initial "C" represents. Some speculate that it is Clay, Champ, Champness or Clyde but a document has yet to surface that proves its meaning.

It is pertinent to note that there was a second man in Richmond County with almost the same name who lived in the same timeframe. Many researchers confuse the two. They were 2nd cousins.

Here is how to easily distinguish between them:

The Elisha C. Terry (1834-1911) of this memorial was a prosperous farmer and landowner, as well as the Postmaster of Bear Branch Post Office. He lived northeast of Rockingham in Roberdell (on the north side of Hitchcock's Creek) and is seen in property records as E.C. Terry with wives Abigail and Jane. He was commonly known as Elisha Terry.

The other man is Elisha Champ Terry (1843-1914), who served as Postmaster of Hamlet in the Marks Creek Township, which is located southeast of Rockingham. He was commonly called Champ Terry and is seen in property records as Champ Terry with wives Emily "Amelia" and Ellen.
