John A Stone
Birth: 1818
Death: 1863

"John A. Stone, Sr. was 42 years old when found in the 1860 Liberty township in Ouachita County, Arkansas. He was born in North Carolina in 1818 and his wife Mary was shown as born in South Carolina. At the time they had eight children; the first two born in Mississippi and the last six born in Arkansas. Also living with them was Louisa F. Stone, age 16, and his overseer, John Maugham. It is uncertain whether Louisa was a daughter or other close relative as another child was listed as the same age. According to family lore: John Stone was a wealthy man with a plantation and one thousand slaves. He kept his son, John Jr. at home to help on the plantation during the war. At war's end, his Confederate money was no good anymore and he couldn't feed, clothe and house the slaves any more. Census records do not support the claim of slave ownership although according to the census, his real estate was valued at $3,300 and his personal estate at $11,000 in 1860. He would have been considered a wealthy man for the time. Although the Ouachita County courthouse records burned in 1871, a government land patent awarded to John A. Stone is on file with the Bureau of Land Management in Washington D.C. He had been awarded 40 acres in 1857. John and Mary's children were Sarah Elizabeth, Martha A., James W., Mary Elizabeth, John A., Jr., Thomas N., Lancy L. and Texana Stone. John, his wife Mary and two of their children died between 1863 and 1864. Family members do not know what caused their deaths so close to one another. Mrs. Robert (Barbara) Ray, descendant of Sarah Elizabeth Stone Walker, found the tombstones in Two Bayou Cemetery in Ouachita County in June, 1998" (Biography submitted by Margie from Washington)
