Death: Jun. 20, 2013
Peoria County
Illinois, USA

Bob Lapke, 65, passed away at 3:35 a.m., Thursday, June 20, 2013, at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home, after a three year battle with ALS.

Bob was born on January 28, 1948, in Chicago, to August and Harriette (Duffy) Lapke. He married Jalayne Morrison on November 19, 1988, in Peoria. She survives.

He is also survived by his daughter, Jenny; his brothers, Rick (Janice) of Chicago, Mike (Janette) of Antioch, IL, and Dan (Elise) of St. Louis; his sister, Jan (Tim Licht) Lapke of Burlington, WI; nieces and nephews Jamie, Amee, Becki, Kevin, Valarie, and Drew Lapke, Jeff Kaminski, and Eric Licht; three of his dogs, Maddie, Bella, and Tilly.

Bob graduated from Lane Technical High School in Chicago, attended the University of Illinois, and graduated from New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He joined Caterpillar Tractor in 1970 and was a senior project mechanical engineer when he retired in 2009.

He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church and Christ the King Prayer Group.

Bob was a member of the Vintage Karting Association, where he served as treasurer. He was active in go karts starting at age 12. His Central Illinois karting life began in August 1970 in the Corcoran garage on Daniel Parkway in Washington, Illinois. He raced B stock karts on the MidOhio, Road America, IRP, State Fair Park and Blackhawk tracks.

He was a member of the Peoria Speedskating Club, where he served as treasurer; the BMW Motorcycle Club; and the Peoria Ski Club.

Bob was an avid bicycler. He flew parachute jumpers. He loved watching Formula 1, motorcycle, and bicycle races. He drove his Porsches in fine weather and his Jeep when the weather was unkind, he rode his motorcycles in Alaska and Europe, and the southwestern U.S. No golf - it was slow, too slow. "Golf would be fine," he said, on many occasions, "if I could ride the ball."

With Jenn and Jay, he participated with the Zambia Medical Missions Teams, taking medical care into the bush in Zambia, Africa.

Bob was a loving father, husband, friend, brother, and son. His strong faith and stubborness are a light to us all.

Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m., Monday, June 24, 2013, at St. Thomas Catholic Church. Father Thomas Taylor will officiate. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., Sunday, June 23, 2013, at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. An additional visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the Mass also at the church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.

Vintage Icon Bob Lapke Passes Away
National Kart News: (June 20, 2013) It is with much sadness that I report the passing of Bob Lapke this morning, vintage racer extraordinaire and VKA Treasurer. Bob succumbed to a brave battle against ALS. He raced at last year's Quincy event but had been unable to race since then. However, he did visit at Springfield just a few weeks ago.
Bob was a prince of a fellow and a true family man. He always had a kind word for everyone and was well respected within our racing community. My earliest recollection of meeting him was at enduro events where we both competed in modern laydown enduros. He was always proud to have been at Quincy in the Wide World of Sports broadcast as a competitor in the early 60s. His skill and craftsmanship in restoring vintage karts was without equal, and he could drive a C Open with the best of them.
Bob will be sorely missed.

RIP Bob Lapke
Bob Lapke succumbed to the effects of ALS disease on June 20. He passed peacefully in the company of his spouse and daughter, Jalayne and Jennifer. Our heartfelt condolences.
Bob began go kart racing in the very early sixties growing up in Chicago. He began with a 1960 Evans kart and McCulloch engine. He was a mechanical engineering graduate from New Mexico State University, and began racing road race karts after graduating and beginning a career at Caterpillar Tractor Company in 1970. He almost always raced B Stock karts beginning with a Rice kart with dual Mac's. That progressed to Yamahas, Atlas, Komet, and Parilla engines with a succession of chassis from hand built through Invaders and Margays. He raced throughout middle America and at Daytona and will be remembered by many current and former karters as finishing first and finishing fast, winning races throughout his career including a WKA nationals.
More recently, Bob became very involved in vintage kart racing, and again favored twin engine karts. He was recently inducted in to the vintage kart hall of fame. During the induction conducted by Jeff Brown through an internet connection with participants at the recent Newcastle event, Bob commented on how much he enjoyed the friendships from karting, and particularly the friends he has in the vintage karting community.
Bob epitomized the racer who races for the fun and satisfaction of the sport, and the friendships from the sport. Karting was an end goal for Bob, not a means to an end. The karting community and the sport are better from his participation and contribution. God speed Bob.
