Olive C. Johnstone, formerly Olive née Child, daughter of Howard Child of West Newton
Massachusetts. Olive was the widow of John Purroy Mitchel, the mayor of New York City from 1914 to 1917, and the 2nd youngest man to ever become mayor of that city. Mayor Mitchel died tragically in 1918 on a stateside training flight, while serving as a Major in the U.S. Army Air Service, during World War I. In 1931, she was married to Hugo R. Johnstone. The couple resided in Biorritz, France for eight years before moving to their residence in Coronado, San Diego, California. Beside her husband she leaves her sister Mrs. R. Howard Cooley of Brookline, Massachusetts.

She lost her husband, John Perroy Mitchel, on Jul 6, 1918 in an "aeroplane accident at Gerstner Field La." He, when called to active service, was a Major A.S.Sig C Feb 11, 1916 from ORC (training). His principle stations were San Diego, Calif. and Lake Charles, Lousiana. Mrs. J. P. Mitchel was notified when she lived at 447 W 162nd Street, New York, New York. (New York Abstracts of WWI Military Service, 1917-1919) According to newspaper account, she was at the airfield when the accident occurred but did not witness the event.
