Robert Lewis "Poochie" Cooper, 73, died at his home in Magnolia Springs, Texas on August 17, 2012 following a long illness. His prognosis was established several years preceding his death and he lived his life instead of accepting his fate. He raised his last garden this past spring and when told two months before his death that there were wishes for his improved health, he replied "I hope I can continue to feel as well as I do now."
Poochie was born in Austin, Texas on July 19, 1939 to parents Huelan Amberson "Bully" Cooper and Ethel Estelle Goff Cooper. Carefully named for his maternal (Robert Goff) and paternal (Lewis Cooper) grandfathers, at birth a hospital nurse called him "her Poochie" and the name stuck. He grew up in Erin and was a member of the 1957 graduating class of Jasper High School where he excelled in sports and agriculture
He met Betty Ann Fuller at Jasper High and they were married in 1957. He was a resident of Magnolia Springs where he and Betty raised their sons. An avid gardener, hunter and fisherman, he worked for Jasper Newton Electric Co-op in Kirbyville from the age of 17 until retirement. He especially enjoyed a woods fire and cooking for his friends and family. Betty died in 1992 of complications of diabetes. Poochie remarried in 1993 to Dixie Hyden who survives him.
He is also survived by sons, Marshall Glenn Cooper of Magnolia Springs and Charles DWayne Cooper of Cypress; daughter in law, Bobbie Waldon Cooper of Magnolia Springs; four grandchildren, Joshua Cooper of Beaumont, C.J. Cooper and Amber Cooper of Cypress and Jeremy Richard (Cooper) Stockdale of Conroe, two great grandchildren, Joshua and Kylie Cooper of Alaska; Mother, Ethel Goff Cooper of Erin; uncles Halley Cooper ( Joan) of Austin and Marshall Goff (Mary Ann) of Security ; aunt Geneva "Tootsie" Goff Fisher (John Roy) of Austin; great aunt, Robbie Ellett Gibson of Austin; Brother, John Scott Cooper ( Jencie) of Erin; sisters, Linda Cooper Morgan (Ted) of Erin and Norma Cooper(Dan Montana) of Houston; step father-in-law, Larry Tapley of California; sister-in-law, Verna Fuller Smith of Newton; brother-in-law, Allan "Jody" Tapley of Lumberton and many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.
He is also preceded in death by son Robert Lewis Cooper, Jr. and father, H. A. Cooper, Sr. and brother, H. A. Cooper, Jr. , mother-in-law, Neva Gallien Fuller Tapley, brother-in-law John Smith and father-in-law I.D. Hyden.
Services were held at Forest Oak Funeral Home on August 19, 2012. Interment at Magnolia Springs Cemetery. Officiating were his nephew, Bradley Smith and the Rev. Henry Sims. His long time friends at Erin Missionary Baptist Church hosted friends and family preceding and following the service. Memorial donations may be made to the American Hemochromatosis Society or Erin Missionary Baptist Church.
