Mrs. Verna Harrison Duren, age 104 of Crockett, passed away Saturday, December 4, 2010 in the Whitehall Nursing Center in Crockett. Mrs. Duren was born March 17, 1906 in Harrison Town, Texas and had lived in Port Arthur until 1964, moving to Crockett. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was a lifetime member and past president of Port Acres P.T.A. and a member of the Houston County Hospital Auxiliary. Mrs. Duren was a homemaker and was also a member of the New Energy Methodist Church.
Survivors include her children Doris Alderman, of Shreveport, La., Colleen Moore, of Groveton, Verna Hogan Baumbach and husband Joe, of Pasadena, Virginia Sherer and husband Arnold, of Crockett, William Wayne Duren and wife Joann, of Beaumont, James Hudson Duren and wife Sandy, of Crockett and George T. Duren, Jr. and wife Debby, of Lufkin; 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 25 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Preceded in death by her husband George T. Duren, Sr.; great-grandson Brian Moore; eight siblings; and son-in-law Gaylon Alderman. She was the last survivor of the James and Margaret Harrison Family.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Verna Harrison Duren were held Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Richard Gillet and the Rev. Winston Coones officiating. Interment followed in the New Energy Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Energy Cemetery Association, c/o Virginia Sherer, 9270 State Highway 21 East, Crockett, Texas 75835.
