Mass of Christian burial for Jerry Eckart, 58, of Lindsay, was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2012 , at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Muenster with burial in the veteran's section of Sacred Heart Cemetery. Services were officiated by Fr. Ken Robinson, Fr. Ray McDaniel and Fr. George of Denton, under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Muenster.
Jerry was born January 22, 1954, in the Muenster Clinic, the eighth child in a family of eleven children born to the late James and Angeline Walterscheid Eckart. He was a 1972 graduate of Muenster High School. After working at the Muenster Cheese Plant and Fischer's Market, he served in the U.S. Navy before working in maintenance with his father at Muenster ISD.
On March 6, 1987, he married Geri Pohl Colwell and lived with stepson Kelly Colwell on a pecan farm outside of Forestburg, Texas for 15 years. The couple had a son, Michael and a daughter, Christina. Jerry earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees at UNT and taught computer classes including programming at Muenster High School, earning recognition as "Teacher of the Year" from his colleagues. Under his leadership, Muenster students earned both awards and scholarships from the TMSCA and UIL with numerous event championships and the Class A State UIL Championship in 2002. During this time he served on the Muenster Public Library board. He retired from teaching in 2004 and settled in Lindsay, Texas. A lifelong member of Sacred Heart, he then attended St. Peter's in Lindsay.
Jerry is survived by his wife Geri of Lindsay, daughter Christina of College Station, sons; Michael of College Station and Kelly Colwell and wife Janelle of Lindsay; six beautiful grandchildren; Kaylee, Lauren, Audry, Mary, William, and Gabe Colwell of Lindsay; sisters, Mary Koesler, Betty Simmel, Agnes Hesse and Dolores Hofbauer of Muenster, and Rose Black of Myra; and brothers Jim of Myra, Don of Muenster, Mike and Steve of Denton and John of Mead, Washington. Pall bearers were nephews Danny and Paul Black, Ken Hesse, Jason and Stephen Hofbauer and Max Koelser. The family requests that memorials be made to ABBA or the Muenster Public Library.
