A tall monument documents the resting place of Rosa (Farley) Allum at IOOF Cemetery, Marengo, Iowa County, Iowa.
Engraving reads, "In My Father's House Are Many Mansions," beneath which is "Rosa A., wife of J. B. Allum, Born Jan. 16, 1854, Died Oct. 20, 1897, Aged 43 Ys 9 Ms 4 Ds"
Born near Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois Rosanna -- called "Rosa" -- migrated to Iowa with her parents, Ephraim Farley and Margaret McReynolds, about 1866 settling in Marengo in Iowa County. Second eldest of nine children, she married John Banks Allum in 1868. The youngest of her four children, son Walter Francis, died in infancy in 1893. Rosa died from typhoid in 1897. Eleven years later, in 1908, her other son, Lewis Rex, died from typhoid in Minnesota.
Rosa and husband "J. B." are buried on the southwest corner of the Allum plot; baby Walter Francis Allum is on the northwest corner; and son Lewis Rex Allum is near the northeast corner. There is no marker for "Rex," nor an inscription for him on the tall monument on which Rosa and baby Walter Francis are memorialized.
Rosa had the distinction of being an aunt of Cal Farley, founder of Cal Farley's Boys' Ranch at Amarillo, Texas whose likeness appeared in 1996 on a U. S. postage stamp with the appropriate notation "Humanitarian." Cal was the son of Rosa's younger brother Frank Farley (1861-1934)and his wife, Mary Jane "Jennie" Meenach (1856-1947).
