Lieut Harold Charrington
Birth: 1856
Barkingside
Greater London, England
Death: Aug. 11, 1882, Egypt

Lieutenant Charrington, RN was a member of the well-known brewing dynasty; he was Flag Lieutenant to Admiral Sir W H Hewett, (KCB, VC and C-in-C of East Indies)and served on HMS Euryalus. He was the second son of Spencer Charrington of the Parish of Stepney and Great-Grandson of John and Katharine Charrington. He was 26 and his memorial in St Dunstan's Church, Stepney (where John and Katharine are also commemorated)states that he was a "gallant sailor and one who had endeared himself to them all". Some of the windows in the church are dedicated to him by friends of the family. He was killed by Bedouin Arabs in the desert of Mount Sinai whilst on a 'confidential mission' to procure camels and gain the allegiance of the sheikhs by considerable presents of money. On this journey he and his companions, Captain William John Gill and Professor Edward Henry Palmer were led into an ambush and murdered. Their remains, recovered after the war by the efforts of Sir Charles (then Colonel) Warren, now lie in St Paul's Cathedral.
There are memorials to him in St Dunstan's, Stepney, St Dunstan's in Hunsdon, Hertfordshire and in Holy Trinity Church at Barkingside, Essex.(Harold was born at Great Gearies, Barkingside). One of the memorials at Hunsdon is a miniature form of the memorial marking the spot where the murders occurred.
