Ernest was the son of Arthur Gilman Ferdinand and Hattie May Joslin Ferdinand. He had one brother, Ralph, born in 1900.
Ernie attended public school in Winthrop, Mass and attended Dummer Academy from 1922-1924. He was very athletic and was referred to in newspaper reports as "Dummer's star fullback".
He married Dorothy McLennon October 11, 1935
Ernie worked for the Joslin Showcase and Fixtures Company in Boston and Cambridge until 1956 when the business was sold. This company was started by his uncle, Edmund Joslin.
After 1956, Ernie worked for the Arcless Switch Company and retired in 1964.
He collected stamps, coins, and steins. He and his wife vacationed in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina during the winter months. They had no children.
Ernie is buried in the McLennon lot. His wife's ashes are buried with him.
