Death: Nov. 23, 2011

October 5, 1927 - November 23, 2011 EDMOND Lawanta Mace was born on October 5, 1927 in Edmond, Oklahoma. She was the oldest daughter and the second child of Ernest T. Johnson and Georgia Rosebud Johnson. She attended Edmond schools and remained a lifelong resident of the Edmond area. On February 3, 1947, she eloped with Lowell C. Mace to Fort Smith, Arkansas, where they were married. In 1952 their daughter, Connie Mace, was born and in 1959 Richard Dixon joined the family. Jessica Dixon joined the family the next year. From the time of their marriage until 1970, Lawanta and Lowell owned and operated a dairy farm east of Edmond near Jones, Oklahoma. Lawanta was famous for cooking huge meals for the family and farm hands. You could not walk into her house and stay more than five minutes without her saying, "Have you had anything to eat?" Lord knows no one was ever going to go hungry around her. Many will remember her cooking at Oakdale School; some will remember having their hair done at her beauty shop and others will remember her work in the art department at UCO. She was predeceased by her husband; her parents; sister, Janie Miller; Janie's husband, Billy Gene Miller; and their children, Sherra Jean Miller and Sharon Miller; her brothers, Bob Johnson and Marion Johnson; Marion's wife, Freddie Lee Johnson; and Jessica Dixon. She is survived by her daughter, Connie Mace and fiance, John Dill; Richard Dixon and his wife, Vickie; Richard's three children, Gregg Dixon, Christi Deboer and Cassady Dixon; and Richard's four grandchildren, Shaun Dixon, Caleb Dixon, Rachel Dixon and Adam Deboer. She is also survived by her brother, Bill Johnson, his family; her sister-in-law, Kay Johnson; along with numerous nieces and nephews. The family expresses a special thank you to Dr. John Wilkinson at Mercy Hospital for his compassionate care and to the nurses on 4C and 5C. A special thank you also to her niece, Georgia Holcomb, and to Miss Sherry Garrett, Miss Juanita Holloway, Mrs. Ethel Guyton, Miss Cecilia McConnon and Miss Bobby Holliday for keeping her happy and comfortable in her last years. Services will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, November 28, 2011, in the chapel at Matthews Funeral Home, 601 S. Kelly Ave., Edmond, OK.
