Thomas W. Moffatt, well known resident of this city, died at his home, 695 West Fifth, Thursday morning at 3 o'clock. He was born in Orillia, Canada, May 15, seventy-nine years ago, and had made his home here for the past seventeen years. He was a member of the local G.A.R. post and served in the civil war under General Grant and marched with Sherman's army to the sea. He enlisted in the war at Dixon, Illinois, September 14, 1861 and was a member of Company B, twelfth Illinois volunteer infantry.
He is survived by three daughters, Mrs F.S. Wood of Orillia, Canada; Mrs J. Frasher, Minneapolis, and Miss Elma Moffatt, Dubuque, three sons, James L., of St Paul, W.W. and R.A. Moffatt, both of Dubuque. Burial in the East Dubuque, Illinois cemetery.
NOTES: Wrote a Civil War memoir that his son Wally interviewed, and published in the Mathias-Moffatt Publishing house of which he was VP in DBQ.
Thomas' feet were badly damaged from foot rot and frostbite during the Civil War so his feet bothered him all of his life, and he often wore slippers in photos.
