Maria Peterjohann immigrated to America in 1834 with her sister and brother-in-law, Christina (Peterjohann) and Adolph Heinrich Fiegenbaum. According to Maria's grandson, Frank Schoppenhorst, Wilhelm Schoppenhorst was aboard the same ship. By July 1834, the group had arrived in St. Louis and then traveled west to St. Charles and Warren counties. Maria Peterjohann secured employment with the Julius Mallinckrodt family of St. Charles as a domestic and Mrs. Mallinckrodt taught Maria the English language.
Maria Peterjohann married Wilhelm Schoppenhorst in MO on 05 Apr 1835. The marriage was recorded in records of Femme Osage Township, St. Charles County, MO, and copy is to right; Maria's birth year was listed as 1810. Six known children blessed this union: Christina Elsabein, Christina Maria "Mary," Heinrich "Henry" Adolph, Sophia Elizabeth, Wilhelmina "Minnie" Christina, and Eduard.
Mrs. Schoppenhorst's obituary was located by Cathie Schoppenhorst in an 1862 issue of Der Christliche Apologete listing date of death on 22 March 1862. Also, an entry in Warren County, MO, records shows that Mr. and Mrs. Schoppenhorst were both living April 1861. Thus, reasonable interpretation indicates a death in 1862 and not 1861.
This same obituary lists birth of 23 March 1809; Ladbergen records indicate a birth date of 22 March 1809. One might, therefore, reasonably conclude that birth and death dates on her marker require further study.
