According to her obituary, Margaretha Gieck nee Ösper was born in "Lichtenstein, Kingdom of Bavaria." She, her husband, brewer Gottfried Gieck, and her daughter, Elisa, immigrated to America arriving NY 3 September 1846. From there, the family headed to Cincinnati. In 1857, the Gieck family moved to Gasconade County, MO. Widowed in 1859, Margaretha nee Ösper married Frederick Schmidt 16 December 1860, Osage County, MO. She appeared in the best of health and her death in April of 1878 was totally unexpected. She reportedly died from a stoke or heart attack.

Partial obituary from Der Christliche Apologete: ...Sister Schmidt made for many years the Martha Services for the church with a willing heart (Martha Dienste is deaconry – at that time it often meant nursing). She was respected and loved and leaves behind a husband and seven children, all who are grown, and many relatives. ...

APRIL 1878 - Ja, sie lebt in jener Welt, Dasz für ihre Lieb und Treue sie den Seligen zugesellt. Eines höher¹n Lohns sich freue. Lebt wo segnend und beglückt Sie noch immer auf uns blickt. Here rests in peace MARGARETHA SCHMIDT BORN SEPT 18th, 1818 - DIED APRIL 29th, 1878 - possibly: As one who enjoys her rewards...Lives without limits and with good fortune...She looks upon us from above.
