|Birth: ||1818, Germany|
August immigrated from Prussia in 1855-1856 to Goliad County, Texas. The family consisted of August, wife Maria, sons Robert and Herman E.P., and daughter Auguste. August is on the Goliad tax rolls beginning in 1856 and ceasing after 1862 (he died in 1863). He bought a hotel in Goliad in 1856 - which is now referred to as the Seidel Hotel.
Records of land in Goliad County show that this interesting old building was acquired by August Seidel from C.A. Ballard in 1856, who constructed it in 1854. The selling price was $225. It was a two story stone structure with two rooms upstairs and two rooms downstairs. The front room downstairs was used as a parlor, with a bedroom at the back. The two rooms upstairs were bedrooms and used by semi-permanent guests.
At the back, to the west and on the south side, was a wooden structure used as a kitchen-dining room accessible by a porch beneath the stairs. The stairway was on the south side and the area beneath the stairs was an open porch leading out to the large dining room, where boarders took their meals. To the north of this stone building, the Seidels owned a dormitory-like frame building which housed roomers, drummers and other guests. Mrs. Seidel served bounteous meals in the dining room adjoining the stone building and the establishment acquired a good reputation as the "Seidel Hotel."
Robert Seidel died in 1891 and his widow, Wilhelmina, continued to operate the hotel and serve boarders until the early 1900s.
