Moses H. Burroughs
Birth: Apr. 19, 1806
Mercer County
New Jersey, USA
Death: Jun. 4, 1891
Mercer County
New Jersey, USA

Moses was the ninth of ten children of Philip Burroughs and Keziah Hendrickson Burroughs.

Moses grew up in Hopewell Twp., Mercer Co., New Jersey. He was a prosperous farmer.

He married twice. His first wife was Jerusha Hart, whom he wed on May 17, 1827. They had three children: Richard Hart in 1828, Huldah Ann in 1834, and William Lanning in 1846. All of their children married a Mathews.

On Oct. 25, 1862 in Kingwood Twp., Hunterdon Co., New Jersey, Moses married Maria Mathews, the eldest sister of his daughter- and son-in-law. They had no children together.

An anecdote appeared in "The Hopewell Herald" on Aug. 8, 1889 headlined 'A Record Seldom Equaled -- Never Excelled':

"Mr. Moses Burroughs, of Pennington vicinity, a wealthy farmer, has made a record as a grain stacker that is seldom equaled. He is in his 85th year, and has stacked every year for seventy years!

It is related of him that this year when the harvest was fit for the cradle, the boys asked the old gentleman who was to do the stacking. He told them not to worry, but to get the grain ready -- there would be a way provided. When all was ready he took his position on the stack bottom and told them to pitch the grain to him! He says when he gets in the middle of a stack ready for business he feels as much at home as he ever did.

Mr. Burroughs is one of the original Burroughs family that came from Long Island and settled in the vicinity of Trenton many years ago, and which was famous for longevity.

Although in his 85th year his physical and mental strength would shame many a man twenty-five years younger.

Such a 'sturdy oak' of humanity is pleasant to contemplate, in these days of physical and mental wrecks at forty or fifty years of age."

Moses enjoyed one more year of good health before dying of intestinal paralysis.

He had 13 grandchildren and 166 additional known descendants as of early 2008.
