|Birth: ||Feb., 1839|
This is my great grandmother.
Mary Clark Johnson was the mother of my grandfather, Riley R Johnson and the daughter of Luther Clark and Susan Whitefield both from North Carolina.
Mary married William Riley Johnson 15 Dec 1869 in Hamilton Co, Illinois. They had 2 sons, Melvin Ellis Johnson and Riley Robertson Johnson. Mary's husband William died in Feb 1872, before his son Riley was born. Mary took her son Melvin and moved back to Putnam Co, TN. She gave birth to Riley R. Johnson April 4, 1872 at her mother's home. Mary's mother died in 1877. Mary then moved with her sisters and brother to Arkansas. Her son Riley married in 1888. In 1896 Mary moved with her sons and several other family members to Lamar Co, Texas. Mary lived with her son Melvin for several years. She was living with her son Riley when she died in 1928. She never remarried after her husband died.
She went to the Methodist Church located next to Forest Hill Cemetery. Mary is buried in an unmarked grave next to her grandson Elmer C Johnson, born 21 May 1909 Lamar Co, TX and died 19 June 1914 Lamar Co, TX. Elmer was the son of Melvin Ellis Johnson born 1870 in Hamilton Co, IL and Lorene Elnorr Dickerson Smith born in Rockwall TX.
My Aunt, Mary L Johnson Cox, named after her grandmother remembers her grandmother was laid out in the dining room and family and friends came for the viewing at the house. She remembers going to the funeral at Forest Hill. My aunt told me she attended the Methodist Church at Forest Hill with her grandmother, her parents and my parents. Aunt Mary was 14 years old when her grandmother, Mary Johnson, died.
The memorial photo shows the grave of Elmer C Johnson and my great grandmother is buried next to him in an unmarked grave.
