A graveside service will follow at Lakewood Memorial Cemetery in Henderson under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home.
Mr. Grant passed away peacefully November 6, 2013 under the care of Hospice of East Texas following a brave battle with cancer. He was born December 28, 1933 in the small community of Liberty, between Henderson and Tatum in Rusk County. He was the son of James Mitchell and Sudie Mae Grant and the youngest of six children.
After graduating Henderson High School, John attended Texas A & M University. He graduated in 1956 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He was honorably discharged as a Captain following 12 years of service.
John worked as a Registered Professional Civil Engineer in private practice and retired from the Texas Department of Transportation in 1995 after 30 years. He had many hobbies and especially enjoyed golf, hunting and fishing. As a member of Briarwood Country Club for over 40 years, John made many wonderful lifelong friends. John loved hunting in West Texas but his passion was for trotline fishing in the rivers of East Texas.
John is preceded in death by his son Thomas Anthony Grant. He is survived by loving family including his wife of almost 55 years, Kathleen Flanigan Grant of Tyler; daughter, very special son and grandson, Shannon, Kevin, and Travis King, all of Bullard; sisters, Sylvia Ross, of Henderson, Lavis Gentry of Marshall, and Sue Dowden and husband Ed of Bullard.
