Longview (Cowlitz County)
"First seven years in Idaho. Folks raised wheat on their homestead; helped other farmers, even had a partner in raising turkeys. Dad bought his first car in 1922 and moved us to Spokane, Washington. By then we were a family of six; I the only girl. Loved grade school in Spokane, but family moved to the Boy Scouts of America Camp Cowles on Diamond Lake. Dad was the caretaker and mom helped the chef in the kitchen during summer when the scouts were there. A wonderful place for kids. Moved to Newport, WA in 1927 where youngest brother, John Robert (Bobby) was born. Left there in 1929."

After moving to Longview, my grandfather found a rare depression-era job at the Long Mill. Later he worked for the City of Longview's street department.
He enjoyed fishing (he caught large salmon in the Columbia River and dipped smelt from the Cowlitz River), hunting and vegetable gardening.
