Roy is the son of William Hand and Carolyn Curtis. They moved from Ontario, Canada to Rockwood, Manitoba, Canada before Roy's birth.

Roy was a farmer when he was drafted on November 17th, 1917 in Winnipeg. Manitoba under the Military Services Act of 1917.


According to the CEF Burial Card record, Roy died of his wounds that were sustain when he was taking part in the operations East of Dumery on August 13th, 1918. He sustained head wounds and schrapnel to his right leg. He was taken to the Dressing station and later evacuated to the No 47 Casualty Clearing Station but sadly he died of his wounds 4 days later.
