Master Corporal, front-line medical technician with 5th Field Ambulance, based in Valcartier, Quebec. Aged 34, he grew up in Boucherville and lived in the Quebec City area.
He along with another soldier, MWO Mario Mercier, and an Afghan interpreter were killed when their light-armoured vehicle drove over a land mine in the Zhari district about 50 km west of Kandahar. A third soldier and a Radio-Canada cameraman suffered serious injuries while a reporter was slightly injured.
Sixty-nine soldiers and one diplomat have now died since Canada first sent troops to Afghanistan in 2002.
MCpl Duchesne had 14 years service in the Canadian Forces and was on his third overseas tour. He started his military career in the artillery corps before he became a medic. Christian is survived by his spouse Gina Bourque and their three daughters aged 3, 5 and 9; parents André Duchesne and Danielle Cloutier; brother Sylvain (Audrey McNichol); and extended family. Before deploying to Afghanistan just over a month earlier, he gave his daughters a kitten named Moka to keep them company.
Funeral service held on Friday, August 31, 2007 at the Chapel of Parc Commémoratif La Souvenance.
