James Crawford was born in Hartford, Washington Co., NY, 10 July 1802. When he was eight years old, the family moved to Gouverneur, St Lawrence Co., NY. ( The names of his parents were not stated.)
At the age of 16, James was apprenticed to learn the shoe-making trade. He followed this trade most of his life, except for a time when he did wood cutting and other laborius tasks.
James married Ruth Crawford in Mentz, Cayuga Co., NY., in 1822. They made their home in Gouverneur, St Lawrence Co., PA. Here their older children were born: Amos, 5 Apr 1825 (He was not in his father's family in the 1850 census.); Robert,1827; Moses,1828; Sarah, and Benjamin S. Crawford, 1837. The family moved to Seneca Co,PA., where Cornelia, 17 Oct 1839, and Sophronia were born.
James with his family emigrated to Ohio (Cleveland, Shalersville, Cleveland again & Mantua, Portage Co., Ohio) Charles,1845; William Henry, 1847 and Mary Jane,1852 were born in Ohio.
James died Friday,11 June 1886 in Mantua Station, at the age of 83 years, 11 months & 1 day. He was buried Sunday, June 13, in West Lawn Cemetery, Mantua. (At the time no monument was erected for either James or Ruth, until 1915 when their son Charles ordered & had them placed in the cemetery.)
James' obituary did not mention his parents' names or the fact that he and Ruth had five sons who served during the Civil War, all of whom survived, though not in good health.
