Merrill served in the Civil War along with his brothers; Silas Louis Wentworth and Albert Bingham Wentworth. Although none of them were injured the war had a profound effect on Merrill. He rarely would talk about his experience in the war. He lived the later years of his life at the Vetrans Home at Yountville, he died there.
According to a letter written by his niece Hazel Brown Kennedy Merrill came home from the war to find his girl had married someone else, that too had to give him reason to not speak of the war.
From the Massachusetts Town Records; Married Sarah J. Johnson, daughter of Andrew and Louisa Johnson, on 2 Sept of 1862 at Lowell, Middlesex, Massachusetts. She of Lowell at the time of the marriage but born 18 years prior at Frankfort, Waldo, ME. Merrill is listed as a Carpenter at this time. This was the first marriage for both parties.
Enlisted at the age of 23 on 25 Aug 1862, serving in Company D Massachusetts 6th Infantry Regiment
Mustered out 3 Jun 1863 at Lowell, MA. At this time he lists his occupation as a blacksmith.
Enlisted in Company D Massachusetts 6th Infantry Regiment on 16 Jul 1864
Mustered out on 27 Oct 1864 at Readville, MA
This company was on the side of the Union.
He is listed as a blacksmith at the time of his enlistment.
1850 he is living with his siblings; Silas, Susan, Mary, Augusta, Albert and Louisa Wentworth in Brooks, Waldo, ME
1858, 1859, 1861, 1864, 1865, 1866 and 1868 he is listed in the U.S. City Directory of Lowell, Middlesex, MA
1870 Liberty, Clay, MO census enumerated on 20 Jun, Merrill is living in the same home with his sister Mary; his other sister Louisa, her husband John Woods and their children Henrietta, Albert and Henry live next door to them. Merrill's wife is not with him in this census record
