MRS. LUCY LEWIS
Well Known and Highly Esteemed Former Resident of Madison, Died at Washington, D.C.
Telegrams received by relatives last night announce the death of Mrs. Lucy Lewis, widow of the late W. O. Lewis, which occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bruce Morton, in Washington, D.C., at 6 o'clock yesterday evening.
Mrs. Lewis recently suffered a severe sickness but recovered sufficiently to be up and about the house. A few days ago she was stricken with paralysis which caused her death.
The decedent was a daughter of Preston and Jane Christie, pioneer residents of Ripley county. She was in her 78th year and was born on the old home place just over the Jefferson county line. Her Christian life was beautiful from its beginning to its close and after her marriage to Mr. Lewis she made Madison her home. She was a graduate of Moore's Hill College. For the past fifteen years she has been living her with daughters at Madisonville, Ohio and at Washington, but frequently visited here among friends and relatives and our city and its hospital be people ever held a warm corner in her heart. It was here the best days of her life were spent and when her last hour came and the God of eternity called her to her everlasting rest, it was her desire that beneath the shady trees of Springdale cemetery should be her eternal abiding place. She was a member of Trinity Church, this city, and she had a wide circle of friends who will learn of her passing with deep regret.
Mrs. Lewis is survived by two sons, Mr. Preston C. Lewis, of Aberdeen, Miss., and Capt. William O. Lewis, of Washington, and two daughters, Mrs. Clifford McLaughlin, of Madisonville, O., and Mrs. Bruce Morton, of Washington, the latter a step-daughter. She also leaves one brother, Dr. J. H. Christie, of North Madison, and one sister, Mrs. S. B. Lewis, wife of Dr. Lewis, living on the old home place.
The remains will arrive in Madison on the noon train Friday, but the time of the funeral is not known.
