My Hero...My Daddy

***********************************************
excerpts from the wonderful article to the right from the Pendleton Times in Dec 1961:

Henry Toppe was born near Dudleytown, a picturesque little village in southeastern Jackson County. He attended school there and then worked on farms until he was a young man. He then went to Indianapolis where he worked at the American Car & Foundry Co.
During World War I, he enlisted in the US Army and advanced to the rank of Drill Sergeant. Later he was transferred to a hospital unit and served in France with that unit.
After the war, Toppe took a job with the Wabash Construction Co. of Terre Haute.
Toppe later took a job as a guard at the Indiana Reformatory and, after being there two years, was promoted to Leiutenant. During his time at the institution he served as Assistant Superintendent three different times until his retirement on March 5, 1961.
He and Mrs. Toppe, the former Leona Denny Daglish, were married June 30, 1933.
They have one daughter that they adopted in 1946, Margie Sanders, of Anderson as well as Leona's children from her first marriage, Betty Jean and Robert J. "Bobby Jim" Daglish of Indianapolis.
The family are members of the Pendleton Christian Church, where Henry served as deacon, elder, and chairman of the board. Mr Toppe is also a member of Madison Lodge No. 44, F & A.M.

A moment of silence please... For the brave men and women that protected our Freedom, and did not return to be with us today... My heart goes out their family and friends on this day, their day, our Memorial Day~*~
