Born in Kouchibouguac, Kent County, New Brunswick, Canada to John Peter O'Donnell and his wife Anne Tracey. Daniel had 13 brothers and sisters. Daniel married Agnes Fritz-Meyer on 21 Nov 1898 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Snohomish County, Washington.
They had three children:
1. Norman Leonard O'Donnell md. Lillian Dickes
2. Marion Augusta O'Donnell md. Ralph Woodcock
3. Helen Gertrude O'Donnell md. Edward Alvin Kimberley

His obituary in The Vancouver Sun, Friday, 12 March 1937, page 17, column 2 reads:
O'Donnell - passed away at his residence, 8608 French St., March 11, 1937, Daniel James O'Donnell aged 64 years. Survived by his loving wife and two daughters, Mrs. Ralph Woodcock, 1766 Gordon Ave., West Vancouver and Mr.(sic) Edward Kimberley, 7886 Cartier St. Vancouver; and Norman L. Everett, Washington; one brother Thomas, Los Angeles, and two sisters, Mrs. Charles Powers, Los Angeles; and Mrs. Edward Morrisey, San Francis County Remains are resting at T.J. Kearney & County parlors, 802 W. Broadway. Funeral on Monday, March 15, at St. Anthony's Church Marpole. Requiem mass at 9:30, Rev. Father Fogarty celebrant. Interment Ocean View burial park.
