Richard ('Dick') Gordon was a son of the Rev. Simeon Moore Gordon and Jessie W. (Winchester) Gordon. One of his other brothers, Leading Aircraftsman (Pilot) Bruce Moore Gordon, was killed in a flying accident in 1944 and is buried in Hagersville's Cemetery.

Hampden aircraft #AE426 was carrying incendiaries when it was shot down 18 miles south of Kiel, at Newmunster, Germany, FS J.A. Romas (RAF), and Sgt W.W. Perroux (RCAF) were also killed. Flight Sergeant Pilot Gordon was buried at Newmunster, exhumed, and reinterred in the Ohlsdorf Cemetery, Hamburg, Germany.
