Regiment/Service: London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers), 1st/7th Battalion ('The Shiny Seventh')

The 1/7th landed in France in March 1915 with 4th London Brigade, 2nd London Division (in May these became 140th Brigade, 47th Division) and remained with it until January 1918. Its first major action was at Festubert in May 1915, and subsequently it fought at Loos (September 1915), Vimy (May 1916), High Wood (September 1916) Butte de Warlencourt (October 1916) , Messines (June 1917) and Cambrai (November 1917).

Additional Information:-
Private J. A. HARRIS volunteered for military service in August 1914; he underwent a period of training prior to his being transferred to France. He took part in the battles of Arras and the Somme, where he was reported missing; he is presumed to have been killed in action on 7 Oct 1916.

He was entitled to the General Service and Victory Medals.

Born at Lillie Terrace, Icknield Port Road, in Birmingham.

Son of the late John George Harris and son of Mrs. Minnie (Smith) (Harris) Hollingsworth of Bedford Avenue, Hick Street, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. Stepson of Samuel H. Hollingsworh of Birmingham. Brother of Elsie, Minnie, Edith, Albert Edward HARRIS (who also served) and William Henry Harris. Half-brother of George Howard, Samuel Frederick, Ernest Edwin and Alfred H. Hollingsworth.
