Retired Ventura County Municipal Court Judge John Hunter died from a heart attack Sunday, his family said. Hunter died as he was preparing to teach a Sunday school class in Ojai. He was 71.

An appointee of Gov. Ronald Reagan, Hunter was sworn in as a judge on May 4, 1970, the day he turned 34. At that time, he was the youngest judge in California.
Hunter served on the Municipal Court bench until his retirement in 1992, said his son, attorney Scott Hunter. However, he continued to sit by assignment in Ventura County Superior Court for an additional 10 years.
Before becoming a judge, Hunter had done trial work for the Ventura County District Attorney's Office and, also, in private practice.

John J. Hunter was born and raised in the Los Angeles area and attended Brigham Young University, where he played basketball. He graduated in 1960 with a bachelor's degree in political science and remained at BYU for his master's degree in political science.

In 1963, he received his doctor of jurisprudence degree from the University of Southern California School of Law. Beyond the courtroom, Hunter founded Deseret International, a nonprofit organization that has donated medical equipment and supplies to underprivileged countries. It also sent doctors to perform surgeries and train local doctors.

Hunter was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many teaching and leadership positions. The 30-year resident of Ojai also supported the Boy Scouts of America, receiving its Silver Beaver Award, which is presented for distinguished service to young people.

Hunter is survived by his wife, Louine Berry Hunter, 10 children and 53 grandchildren.
A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3501 Loma Vista Road, Ventura.
