CONFEDERATE GEORGIA TROOPS

12th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry
4th (Avery's) Cavalry Regiment was formed with eleven companies in January, 1863, using Avery's 23rd Georgia Cavalry Battalion as its nucleus. It served for a time with the Conscript Department in Tennessee, then was assigned to J.J. Morrison's, C.C. Crews', and Iverson's Brigade. The regiment participated in the Chickamauga, Knoxville, and Atlanta Campaigns, skirmished in Northern Georgia and East Tennessee, and took part in the defense of Savannah. In January, 1865, the unit was reorganized and called the 12th Cavalry. It went on to fight in the Carolinas and surrendered with the Army of Tennessee. The field officers were Colonel Isaac W. Avery, Lieutenant Colonel William L. Cook, and Majors D. Jackson Owen and Augustus R. Stewart
Letter dated May 31, 1989 from Dorothy Scott Cox states that her mother, Ollie Kinser Scott, told her that her father, Samuel was taken as prisoner of
war and spent much time in that capacity. When he returned home his health was ruined and he never regained it. He died when only 55 years of age.
According to the census record of 1860 the Peter Kinser(Samuel's father) family was living in Bradley County. Tennessee, which is on the border of Gordon County, Georgia. Samuel Peter is listed as 17 years old. In the next couple of years he began service in the Confederate army in Georgia. At the age of 24 in 1867, he married Margret Anna Helsley whom he had met in Gordon County. Georgia They moved to Parker and then Johnson Counties, Texas in 1867 and their first child was born in January of 1868, but only lived about 3 weeks. The Helsley family also came to Johnson County, Texas and settled in the Joshua community. Samuel's family also lived some time in Parker County. Texas just north of Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas.since my grandfather,James Albert Kinser was born in Aledo(Parker County.) in 1882 Samuel settled a 640 acre homestead owned in Johnson County. near Godley. This family farm came to Ed and Vivian Lee Kinser Queen when Samuel died in 1899 and then to their daughter, Eddie Lee Queen, Eddie Lee sold this property around 1988 and it is still known as the Kinser place. it is now being used for cattle grazing and when I visited in 2005 I saw it was being sub-divided, and a home now sits about in the middle of the property. being so close to Ft. Worth I suspect it will not be long until it is no longer recognizable where a farm once even existed. TO LOCATE THE FARM TAKE THESE DIRECTIONS: GO N OUT OF CLEBURNE ON HIGHWAY 171 TOWARD GODLEY. INTERSECT HIGHWAY 4 AND HEAD West TOWARD GRANBURY.IN ABOUT 5 MILES INTERSECT FARM TO MARKET #1229. AT THIS INTERSECTION LOOK TO YOUR RIGHT(BY COMPASS TO THE NORTH) AND YOU WILL SEE THE OLD KINSER PLACE.
