Death: Jan. 27, 2009

BOB RAY IS THE SECOND CHILD AND FIRST AND ONLY SON OF WILLIAM BUFORD DAVIS AND HATTIE ILA SARRETT. HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS SISTER 3 YEARS HIS SENIOR AND A NEPHEW.

WHEN BOB RAY WAS A BOY OF 9 HE HAD AN ACCIDENT THAT PRETTY MUCH DEFINED THE REST OF HIS LIFE IN MEDICAL TERMS. HE RECEIVED A PAIR OF BOOTS. HE STEPPED ON A BOARD WITH A NAIL IN IT. FOR DAYS HE DIDN'T TELL HIS PARENTS BECAUSE HE THOUGHT THEY WOULD TAKE HIS BOOTS AWAY FROM HIM. BUT FINALLY WHEN INFECTION HAD SET IN HE COULDN'T STAND THE PAIN ANY LONGER. THIS ALMOST COST HIM HIS LIFE AS IT WAS BEFORE THE DAYS OF ANTIBIOTICS EXCEPT FOR SULFA. HE SPENT WEEKS IN THE HOSPITAL WITH A SYSTEMIC INFECTION AND HIS LEG PACKED IN SULFA. HE NEVER COMPLETELY RECOVERED AND HE WAS CRIPPLED FOR LIFE. IN HIS LATER YEARS HE WAS CONFINED TO A WHEELCHAIR.

HIS FATHER LIVED IN DENVER, CO. SO HE WENT THERE TO STAY WITH HIS FATHER. HE WORKED FOR THE SOCIAL SECURITY OFFICE IN DENVER. WHILE WORKING THERE AN ACCIDENT OCCURRED AND THE GOV. OFFICE WAS RULED NEGLIGENT SO BOB WAS AWARDED A LUMP SUM SETTLEMENT, WHICH HE WISELY INVESTED. THIS WAS HIS INCOME FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE. HIS MOTHER MOVED TO GA TO BE NEAR HIS SISTER, BETTY JEAN. BOB WAS HIS MOTHER'S SOLE SOURCE OF SUPPORT FOR ABOUT 20 TO 25 YEARS.

IN THE 1970S BOB CAME ON SEVERAL TRIPS TO BASTROP, TEXAS TO VISIT HIS COUSIN, MARY RUTH SNIPES HUMPHREY. IT WAS A STRUGGLE FOR HIM TO FLY AND BRING HIS CHAIR. WE TOOK SHORT TRIPS TO PLACES LIKE THE RIVER WALK IN SAN ANTONIO. THEN ON SEVERAL OCASSIONS WE WENT TO VISIT HIM IN DENVER. HIS FAVORITE ENTERTAINMENT WAS TO TAKE US TO RESTAURANTS WHERE EVERYONE KNEW HIM. WE ALSO WENT TO ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK, DROVE INTO THE MOUNTAINS AND VIEWED THE WILD LIFE, ESPECIALLY THE ELK.

IN THE 1980S HE HAD A DOG FRIENDLY APARTMENT SO HE BECAME A CARES AND PAWS MEMBER. HE CONTRIBUTED MONEY AND HELPED TAKE CARE OF SOME ANIMALS IN TRAINING. HE LOVED THIS ACTIVITY. ALSO THROUGH A DENVER VOLUNTEER GROUP FOR HANDICAPPED PERSONS HE ENJOYED TRIPS TO WINTER PARK RESORT WHERE HE COULD RIDE BEHIND A DOG SLED AND ENJOY THE SNOW AND SCENERY. THESE EXCURSIONS SEEM TO CHEER HIM GREATLY.
BOB RAY NEVER MARRIED AND HAD NO DESCENDANTS.
BOB RAY HIRED AN ASSISTANT. HE WAS A KOREAN WAR VETERAN WHO HAD MEDICAL CORPS EXPERIENCE. HE WAS KNOWN AS JIM. ONE DAY JIM REPORTED FOR WORK AND FOUND BOB IN BED, BUT HE WAS PASSED AWAY.THE PROBABLE CAUSE OF DEATH WAS BACTERIAL SEPTICIMIA. BOB HAD HAD A CHRONIC INFECTION SINCE HE WAS 9 YEARS OLD. IN 2003 HE DEVELOPED A STAPH INFECTION IN HIS HIP. HIS DOCTORS INFORMED HIM THAT A HIP REPLACEMENT WOULD REQUIRE LIFE TIME ANTIBIOTIC TREATMENT AND WOULD BE LIFE THREATINING. WHILE HE HAD THE SURGERY AND WAS ABLE TO SURVIVE FOR SEVERAL YEARS THE INFECTION EVENTUALLY CAUSED HIS DEATH.
