SINGERS GLEN - J. Robert Swank, 93, of Singers Glen died Tuesday night at his home.
Mr. Swank, who was an amateur genealogist and historian, had retired in 1949 from the Chandler Products Corp. in Cleveland, Ohio.
He was born on June 11, 1892, in Singers Glen, Va., and was the son of S. Henton Swank and (Nettie) Virginia Donovan Swank.
Mr. Swank was a graduate of Dunsmore Business College, LaSalle University, Alexander Hamilton Institute and the International Accounting Society.
He served overseas during World War I with the 165th and 326th Aero Squadrons. In 1920, he moved to Cleveland where he worked as an accountant with the Cleveland Automobile Co., The Chandler Motor Car Co., the Hupp Motor Car Co., and the Chandler Products Corp., where he became company treasurer and a director.
Mr Swank was a member of American Legion Posts in Harrisonburg and Cleveland, an honorary member of the Ohio National Guard, 135th Artillary Batallion and the 112th Bombardment Squadron.
He also was a member of the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce, the Medday Club, the Cleveland Treasurer's Club and the National Businessman's Association.
His books on local genealogies and histories include a manuscript on grave records in Rockingham County, Va. cemeteries west of U.S. 11. He also compiled family records for the Ackers, Donovans, Millers, Drivers, Hentons and Ralstons.
His collections of local historical items includes Rockingham County families' records, Bible records and records of churches in western Rockingham and Singers Glen.
Mr. Swank was a member of the Donovan Memorial United Methodist Church. He was a delegate to the United Brethren, the Evangelical United Brethren, The Virginia united Methodist and the World Methodist Conference.
He was a trustee of the United Methodist Church, the Harrisonburg District United Methodist Church and Camp Overlook.
He was a past trustee of the United Brethren Church, Virginia Conference, Winchester District United Methodist Church, Southeastern United Methodist Association for the Retarded and Singers Glen Cemetery.
Mr. Swank was a member of the Singers Glen Ruritan Club, YMCA, the Rockingham County Historical Society, the Folklore Society, the American Automobile Association and the American Association of Retired Persons.
On Aug. 18, 1934, he married the former Alma Charske, who died Jan. 23, 1965.
Surviving are two sisters, Mabel Swank Ruddle of Singers Glen and Madeline Swank Cummins of Lexington, Ky.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at the Donovan United Methodist Church in Singers Glen by the Rev. William Winfree. Burial will be in the Singers Glen Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at the McMullen Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
In lieu of flowers, the family said memorial contributions may be made to the Singers Glen Cemetery Memorial Fund.
