Betty is a granddaughter of Leonidas Hargrove, a Civil War veteran. He is also buried at Asbury Cemtery. As are Betty's parents, Ruth and Joe Lee. There are five generations of the Hargrove family buried here at Asbury.
Alexander and Mary Jane Smith Hargrove were the parents of Leonidas. Alexander's father, Benjamin F. Hargrove, is also buried here. Betty graduated from Morristown High School in 1939 and was fond of attending the annual alumni event.
Betty was married to Charles W. Newkirk for 60 years. They resided in Indianapolis and were the parents of four children.
Before her marriage Betty was the payroll clerk at Indiana Rayon in Greenfield, Indiana. After her children were grown she worked at the downtown L. S. Ayres in Indianapolis. Betty was active in her church, Roberts Park United Methodist located in downtown Indianapolis. She was an active member of the Oliver P. Morton Chapter of the Daughters of the Union. Now she rests with her ancestors and her beloved family.
