John Francis Coleman was the son of Thomas Coleman and his wife, Harriet Stubbs.

John served in the Confederate Army as a private in Company C, 21 Virginia Militia.

John married Mildred Brock Philpotts, a daughter of John Curry Philpotts and his second wife, Ann Tomkins.

married Eliza Holland. After the death of his sister, Hettie, James raised her youngest son, Benjamin Franklin Roane. Benjamin later took the Coleman last name.

5.) Harriet Elizabeth "Hettie" Coleman (18551886)
married Junius Bland Roane

6.) John C. Coleman (18571882)
never married

7.) Mildred Thompson Coleman (18601934)
married William I. Simpson


Saddened over the recent death of his son, John C. Coleman, John Francis Coleman went to Norfolk, Virginia to visit relatives. While he was there visiting he died suddenly and was buried in Norfolk. Later they brought his body home to Gloucester and buried him in the Bellamy United Methodist Church Cemetery where he now lays sleeping beside his beloved wife. --S.C.G.
