LONG, Richard W., age 94 of Milford, husband of the late Florence E. (Theroux) Long, died Friday, August 15, 2008 at the West Haven Veteran's Hospital. Mr. Long was the son of the late Richard W. Long (a Native American Indian) and Vera (Somes) Long of Greenwood, Mass.
He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force, serving as a Tech Sergeant and top-turret and waist gunner on a B-24 bomber in World War II. His aircraft was shot down July 21, 1944. He was held as a prisoner of war in Germany for 319 days. Mr. Long is a recipient of the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters.
Mr. Long was a truck driver for 44 years, mostly for Roadway Express. After retirement, he continued to work 23 more years as an officer in building security. He was an avid Boston fan, Red Sox, Bruins, Patriots and Celtics. He was a member of the Brotherhood of International Teamsters, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign War and the American Legion Post 0200.
Richard is survived by his six children, Robert Long of Westport, Eleanor Iannotti of Florida, Barbara Novak of East Windsor, Lorraine Long-Olson of Meriden, John Long of New York,and Jacqueline Jensen of Colorado. He has been blessed with eight grandsons and one great-grandson. He leaves one brother, Gardner R. Long of Maryland and was predeceased by his other brother, Merritt D. Long of Massachusetts. Mr. Long also leaves his best friends at the garage, Ron, Diane, Richie and Rick.
The funeral services held at Smith & Sefcik Funeral Home, 135 Broad St., Milford were private. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Wakefield, Mass. in the Forest Glade Cemetery.

Note: Dick's cremains stayed with the Smith & Sefcik Funeral Home in Milford, CT for 2 years while his family decided upon his final resting place - his cremains were buried in Forest Glade on August 30, 2010.
