William Washington "Will" Saulmon
Birth: Oct. 30, 1870
Morganton
Burke County
North Carolina, USA
Death: Feb. 19, 1950
Morganton
Burke County
North Carolina, USA

William Washington's father, James W. Saulmon, abandoned the family sometime between 1884 and 1910. The 1900 US Census shows James left his wife and sons and was a 'boarder' of Jane Allman. The other folks in her household were: Lillie A. and Maude E. Allman.

The family in Burke County never heard from James again. To them James "just disappeared." He left a huge gap in Will's life and a long list of questions: Why did James abandon his family? Did James leave or was he driven away? Since he lived nearby after returning to NC, did he keep tabs on the family he left? Why did he not contact any of the Burke County Saulmons? So many questions...

Researching the Saulmon family I have learned that James lived with his brother Charles M. Saulmon and his family in Ohio Township, Morris County, Kansas, USA. In the 1910 Census James claimed to be "widowed" when his wife was very much alive.

James' NC Death Certificate says he had a fractured hip for more than 3 years that contributed to his death in Marion, McDowell County, NC. The date of birth is listed as Nov. 12, 1840. James' death was on Dec. 14, 1912. The certificate states that he was married. There were no names for father, mother or wife, even though there was a space for it.

It is not known where James was buried. If you have any information on this we would love to fill in the blanks here and elsewhere. You can e-mail me by clicking on my name (below) as I maintain this memorial. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
