Menahem Dgani
Birth: Sep. 12, 1947
Death: Jan. 25, 1968

Disaster Victim. A native of Budapest, Hungary, Dgani was a crew member on board the Israeli submarine, the 'INS Dakar' that was lost at sea on January 25, 1968. The submarine which was used in sea and dive trials left England on January 9, 1968, and landed in Gibraltar on January 15, 1968. She was scheduled to return home on February 2, 1968, but the submarine captain wanted to enter port earlier on January 28, 1968. The request was denied and the submarine continued onto Crete where on January 24, 1968, she transmitted her position as being 34.16N 26.26E. On January 24/25, 1968, three control transmissions were transmitted, but the submarine never gave her position. The submarine sent her last message at 0002 and that was the last anybody heard from her. A search and rescue mission was put into action and from January 26-February 4, 1968, Israeli forces searched for the submarine, but the search was called off on the night of February 4th. On February 9, 1969, the stern emergency buoy was found near Gaza, Israeli. The submarine was believed to be in 150 to 326 meters, and 50-70 nautical miles off her planned route, but this was wrong. In April of 1999, another search was conducted and on May 24, 1999, the submarine was found in 3000 meters or 9800 feet of water. Although several artifacts were recovered and pictures and video were taken, no bodies were recovered. The bridge and forward sail of the 'INS Dakar' were raised on October 11, 2000, and are on memorial display in Haifa, Israel.
