Although he and my mother married the year after my husband and I, we loved him as our father. I baked him a heart shaped, double chocolate cake every year on his birthday, which he looked forward to like a little kid and appreciated very much. His last birthday was spent in the rehab center but I still baked his heart shaped cake, which he was all smiles about. The past few years it has been sugar free because of his diabetes but he didn't know it and enjoyed it just as much. I know it was more that I thought of him and thought enough of him to do this on his special day.
My mother was not able to attend the funeral because she was in the rehab center at the same time as him, with a broken hip. A memorial service will be held at a later date, once she is feeling well enough to attend.
His great-granddaughter wrote this beautiful poem through her tears, upon learning of his death.
My Great Grandfather
I love him very much!
He's kind in every way.
Until one day he passed
away before I could say
good bye. I'm just glad
he doesn't have to suffer
no longer than this day.
But he's with God now I
don't have to worry. God
will treat him well. Although
I'll miss him a lot. He'll always
be inside my heart!
Day he passed away:

I'm so very proud of Jillian, who is my 9 year old granddaughter.
God bless you as you rest peacefully with the angels until we meet again.
Here is a memorial page I made for Al.
And here is his 80th birthday party.
My sincere thanks to Gen Gal for sponsoring this memorial. How very kind and thoughtful. God bless you.
