Bertha used to be the church organist and sang. She was valedictorian of her class but was too shy give a talk so they wouldn't give her a diploma. She used to stand at the kitchen window and watch when the barn lights went out and would put supper on the table for Albert. Grandma built the fire while Grandpa milked cows and did barn work. They farmed in Economy, IN and when they retired, Albert Reed Turner took over the farm and they moved into the city. Grandma liked to read and played Muggins or Flinch (card games) when I went to visit them. Grandpa worked as a janitor at the school after retiring from farming.
A classmate of Mother Turner's said of her: "Ever since you came to see me the day I was leaving my home for the last time, when none of my own people were about, I have wanted to tell you how very deeply I appreciated it. So long we have been friends and that gesture was but further proof of your loyalty. Loyalty and loving kindness along with your fine integrity have been your worthy characteristics...how faithful you have always been to the inner dictates, that have made your life such a helpful one to all who have been touched by it..." "How true this statement, as many people could testify."
Bertha and Otis raised 4 boys, each one of them graduating from college which was a feat in those days of the depression. I think that each one of them put themselves through college because Grandma and Grandpa weren't wealthy people.
