Mrs. Lucinda Rae "Cindy" Tompkins, 52, of Thorntown, joined hands with her Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, at Indiana University Hospital, Indianapolis.
Born April 13, 1957, to Donald M. and Frances Evelyn (Redman) Wilburn, both deceased, Cindy was raised in Elwood. She was a 1975 graduate of Elwood Community High School. On June 19, 1976, she married her soulmate, Robert W. Tompkins, in Hobbs, IN. Mr. Tompkins survives.
Cindy worked as a Special Education Teacher at the Western Boone Community School Corporation after getting her bachelor's degree from Ball State in 1978. She later received her master's degree from Butler University. Illness forced her to retire in May 2009 after 31 years of teaching at Western Boone. Education and the improvement of teaching children of special needs was the passion of Cindy's professional life.
On Dec. 2, 1980, she gave birth to a son, Brian R. Tompkins. He graduated from Western Boone in 1999 and he later married Emily Mae Wakefield. In 2009, her sole grandchild and the rose of her heart, Addison Rae Tompkins, was born to Brian and Emily. Cindy's final act before entering the IU Simon Cancer Center due to her declining condition, was to attend Addison's 1st birthday party on Jan. 24, as the guest of honor.
On Sept. 24, 1982, another son, Sean Michael Tompkins, was born. He graduated from Western Boone in 2001 and married Katrina Diane Shepherd.
Cindy will be sadly missed by the many souls she touched in her too-short life; friends, family, colleagues and students all mourn her passage.
Surviving relatives include D. Michael (Kathy) Wilburn of New Braunfels, Texas, Sharon (Richard) Jones of Corunna, Mich., and Sandra Goodknight of South Bend. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A sister, Rebecca, was stillborn in 1953.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, at Lebanon Christian Church, 610 W 250N, Lebanon. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, at the church, with Pastor Lee Faust officiating. A short period of visitation will precede the services. Interment will follow at Maple Lawn Cemetery in Thorntown.
