Sgt. Cody Lynn Huffman, 22, of Osage Beach, Mo., died at 6:44 a.m., Tuesday, May 1, 2012, in his home.
Cody was born on Sept. 14, 1989, in Effingham, the son of David Lynn "Huffy" Huffman and Gertrude Elizabeth "Trudy" Followell. He was currently active in Army National Guard as a machinist.
Cody loved serving his country in Kuwait, and spoiling his nieces. On the days he was not actively serving his country, he was a cook/dishwasher at The INN of Grand Glaze in Osage Beach, Mo.
His 2004 Mustang was his pride. He enjoyed the outdoors, walks, old cars, swimming, being on his buddies', Brad Underwood and Paul Kribs', boat, and loving life. He loved his basset hound Kane and Gizmo. He had a passion for cooking food for others, at work, or for friends and family at home.
He was baptized Southern Baptist. He had a very kind heart and was there for anyone who needed him. He was a great listener, understanding and did not judge others easily. Cody had asthma at a young age but that did not stop him from living his life to the fullest. Cody had a genuine smile that would light up the room. He loved to laugh and joke with everyone; there wasn't a person who he could meet who was a stranger. Many friends and family will miss him!
He is survived by his mother, Trudy (husband, Robert) Butcher, and father David "Huffy" Huffman (significant other, Tina Whitecotton); siblings, Jason Followell, Misty McGregory, and David Lynn (Huffman, Jr.) "DJ" Bailey; grandmothers, Winnie Followell and Leola Ann Matteson; neice, McKaila Jo Bailey; niece, Emmilee Dial; niece and goddaughter; Tessa Rehney McGregory; niece, Baylee Hamm; special friend, Hillary Meyer; friend, Amanda Derek; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Herbert Followell and Marion Huffman.
Visitation was from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, May 7 at the Pagel Funeral Home in Edgewood, IL. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the Funeral Home. Burial followed in Edgewood Cemetery with military graveside rites and flag presentation to each of the parents by Edgewood #1168 and Altamont #512 American Legion Posts.
Taps were played.
Members of the Patriots served as an Honor Guard at the funeral home, presented a flag to each of Cody's parents, then led the procession to the cemetery, serving as Honor Guard there also.
A memorial service was later held at The INN of Grand Glaze, Osage Beach, Mo.
