Laurence A Burkhead, 88, of Battle Creek died Monday, January 28, 2002 at Mercy Pavilion.
He was born December 1, 1913 in Allegan, to Lewis W and Dora (Slentz) Doud Burkhead. He was raised in Michigan, graduated from Lansing Eastern High School and moved to Battle Creek with his family after high school.
He served during WWII with the U. S. Army Air Force, was stationed at the USAAF Gunnnery School in Las Vegas, Nevada, 1941-1945, and was discharged as a Sergeant.
Laurence married Ethel J. Martin August 25, 1943 in Las Vegas, and they returned to Battle Creek in 1946.
He was employed by Rich Manufacturing, later known as Sterling Divison of Federal Mogul Corp. until they closed in 1971, and then worked 11 years for Lakeview School District until he retired in 1981.
He had a life long interest in aviation and enjoyed woodworking, camping, fishing and spending time with his family.
His wife, Ethel, preceded him in death, April 22, 1993. Also preceding him in death was a son, Norman R. Burkhead in 1946, his parents and brothers, Emerson "Nick" Doud, Claud Doud, Clayton Burkhead and Floyd Burkhead.
Surviving are sons, Gordon D. (Angie L.) Burkhead, Keith L Burkhead and granddaughter, Lisa Burkhead (now Bolton), all of Battle Creek.
Visitation was held at Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home in Battle Creek, and funeral Services were held Thursday, January 31, 2002 in the chapel at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens.
