Salvador Mata was born 21 Apr 1921 in Los Angeles, CA to Roberto Mata and Eloisa Ortiz. He graduated from grade school in 1935. He attended Jefferson and Roosevelt High Schools in Boyle Heights area and he quit in the 11th grade after acquiring a work permit and joined the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps), in which he served for over 2 years. He later got his GED in 1950, and when he retired from the Air Force, he went to the same High School, part time, where his children were being educated, and got a regular HS Diploma in 1967 from North Torrance HS.
Sals mother Eloisa died when he was 9 years old. Sal joined the Army in 1942 and except for a brief time as a civilian after WW II he re-enlisted in the Army Air Corps, which converted to the U.S. Air Force and served until July 1966, when he retired as a Master Sgt. in Oklahoma. He and his family returned to California. He had served his country for 22 years. Sal had flown bombing missions all over the South Pacific in WW II as a Radio Operator and Gunner. He served in Spain, Kwajalein, Palma de Mallorca, Hawaii, and 2 hitches in Germany where all 4 of his children were born, as well as many stateside bases.
After he retired, Sal worked for Orloff Meat Co.in Compton, CA for 16 years before retiring.
Salvador married Eleanor Edna Navarro on 26 Mar 1944 in Los Angeles, they divorced after 3 years. Sal married Edeltraut Jutta Fauter on 6 Dec 1954 in Wiesbaden, Germany and they were married 23 years when she died of cancer at the age of 53.
Sal married Donna L. Senff on 16 Jan 1985 in Las Vegas, Clark Co., NV. Sal and Donna moved from Torrance to San Jacinto, CA in 1986. Sal was active in the CCC Alumni Group (NACCCA) in San Bernadino, Chapters 34 & 65, and a member of the Air Force Sgts. Assn.
Salvador died 5 Aug 1994 in Hemet, Riverside Co. CA after a brief illness and hospital stay for heart trouble. He was 73 years old.
Sal was survived by his wife, Donna of San Jacinto, CA; children, Rosalie E. Richard of Long Beach, CA, Estella (Michael) Aldredge of Fairfield, CA, Michael Mata of Simi Valley, CA, and Hortencia (Corky) Mata of San Diego, CA; step daughters, Jodine (Dwight) Emerson of Saugus, CA, and Dera Hanson of Rochester, MN; siblings, Robert (Teresa) Mata of San Gabriel, CA, Natalia (Albert) Nelson of San Bernadino, CA, and Hortencia (Edmundo) Saldivar of Vallejo, CA; grandsons, Cameron E. Medrano and Alexander A. Aldredge of Fairfield, CA; and 4 step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Edeltraut Fauter-Mata.
Services with full Military Honors were held 11 Aug 1994 at Riverside National Cemetery with ashes interred therein.
