A caption on her memorial reads:
"SO SMALL, SO SWEET, SO SOON"
Ten year old Deanna was kidnapped 18 years ago on Mother's Day at a friend's house during the late hours of a slumber party while they all slept. Her disappearance united a community and created an international search for the perpetrators. She attended Elizabeth Little Elementary School in Warren. She promised her mom the night of the party, that she would be home by noon Sunday to make her a special Mother's Day present... a flower made from colored pipe cleaners. Her service was held at St. Basil's Catholic Church in Eastpointe by the Rev. James Profoto. In his homily, he talked about children... their beauty, their mystery, their closeness with God. Even though Deanna's death "brings a heavy heartache," Profota said, "in her living, Deanna revealed something of the mystery of life.... A child can teach us how to live. Children help us to know that hope never dies.... When I think of children, I realize how they help us, how their love makes adults real."
