Mrs. Gill's obituary as found in The Southeast Missourian, dated Saturday, October 26, 1918.. Debi Burgess
"Mrs. Julia Gill, Pioneer, Died Friday Evening; Was nurse during Civil War and had lived most of lifehere.
Mrs. Julia Gill, passed away Friday evening at 6:30 at the age of 73 years. The greater part of her life was spent in Cape Girardeau, having moved her in 1877, from Vienna, Illinois. Her husband, George Gill, died in 1881. Mrs. Gill, whose maiden name was Julia Kiernan, was born in Cavan, Ireland, June 21, 1845. When she was two years old her mother died and two years later the family came to New York to live. At the outbreak of the Civil War Mrs. Gill, then a young woman, volunteered her services to her adopted country in the role of nurse. She accompanied her aunt, one of the sisters of the Holy Cross order, to the hospital in Mound City, Illinois, and there aided in the caring of the sick, wounded and dying. She received a pension from the Government, granted in recognition of the services rendered during that trying period of our country's history.
Ever since her grandson, Glover Gill, had enlisted she had been gratified to know that he was serving his country, and was interested in all reports coming from him from France.
The deaths of her two sons, Barney and Tom, less than a year ago and only a few months apart, had affected her deeply and was a burden hard to bear. She leaves one daughter, Miss Ellen, and one son James of Chaffee; twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from theresidence of Mrs. Thos. Gill on South Lorimier to St. Vincent's Church."
